Art for Water - Minnesota Water Stewards
In the fall of 2022, I applied for a position in the 2023 cadre of Art for Water, a division of Minnesota Water Stewards. Art for Water is a program that links with artists to produce projects, activities and public outreach to inspire water protection. Artist go through the Minnesota Water Stewards program to gain education about the science of water, water policy at the federal and state level and ways to positively impact water quality issue within the community.
My project begins the summer of 2023 and will conclude with a show at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in October 2023 in the Members Spotlight area.
One of the reasons I was drawn to Minnesota was the connection that I felt with the Mississippi River and the childhood experiences that I had swimming in rivers, streams and lakes. My familial bond with freshwater swimming has been a touchstone in my search for my own family history and connections with land. Minnesotans are very connected to their lakes and rivers. No matter the season, Minnesotans are out enjoying nature. We must take efforts to protect our waters to ensure they will be clean, healthy and available to all for people and animals.
Minnesota’s waterways are regulated by the federal Clean Water Act (1972), the state Watershed District Act (1955) and the Minnesota Wetlands Conservation Act (1991).

Project Research
Since moving to Minnesota, I’ve been visiting a lake a little over a mile from my home. My visits are varied - sometimes, I just sit near the banks and watch and other times I go to swim. I am enchanted by the way the light shines on the water. My favorite view is standing in the lake and watching the sunlight on the surface of the water. Sunsets here are dazzling.
Getting to know a place is a slow process. Each visit brings insight into the rhythms present, time passes both slowly and all at once. Becoming deeply connected to a particular place, has been my goal in building my new studio practice and body of work. This is the slow work of attention, building memory and becoming sensitive to looking closely.
